Use a stable work surface, keep your free hand out of the cut path, and direct each cut away from your body and other people. Take your time whenever opening or closing a folder.
Check the edge, handle, and lock. Do not use a folding knife with a damaged or unreliable lock.
Use the right knife for the material. Keep a firm grip and never use a knife as a pry bar or screwdriver.
Keep fingers out of the blade path, disengage the lock deliberately, and close the blade slowly.
Close folding knives and sheath fixed blades before carrying or storing them. Keep them away from children.

Wipe away residue after use, dry the blade and joint fully, and store the knife in a dry place. Follow the maker's instructions for oils, coatings, and sharpening angles.
| Stainless steel | Clean with a mild product, rinse only if the handle and mechanism allow it, then dry completely. Stainless steel can still corrode if stored wet. |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel | Wipe and dry promptly after use, especially after moisture or acidic material. Apply a light protective oil suitable for the intended use. |
| Damascus steel | “Damascus” describes the pattern or construction, not one care rule. Check the maker's steel and finish; when uncertain, keep clean, dry, and lightly protected. |
| Plain / serrated edge | Sharpen a plain edge at the maker's specified angle. Use a suitable tapered tool for serrations, or have the maker service them; avoid grinding away the tooth profile. |
| Wood | Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Never soak; use a handle finish or conditioner only as recommended by the maker. |
|---|---|
| Bone / horn | Wipe clean and dry promptly. Avoid prolonged water, heat, and harsh cleaners; follow the maker's guidance for conditioning. |
| G10 / Micarta / polymer | Clean surface dirt with mild soap on a damp cloth, then dry the scales and hardware. Keep cleaner out of the pivot. |
| Metal | Wipe and dry the handle, especially around fasteners and joints. Use a small amount of appropriate lubricant on the pivot if the maker recommends it. |
