How to Use CCC Knife Sharpeners: Materials & Instructions
Find instructions for CCC’s carbide and ceramic pocket sharpeners, tungsten-steel stages and mini honing rods. Match your sharpener by stock number.
Match the stock number before sharpening
Start with the SKU on your CCC listing. Follow the instructions supplied with that exact tool. A ceramic sharpening surface is different from a ceramic knife blade: these instructions do not mean a tool can sharpen ceramic knives. Use only compatible plain-edged steel blades unless the maker expressly approves another edge type.
S5 Lansky Quick Fix — carbide sharpening and ceramic finishing
The S5 package identifies separate carbide and ceramic stages. The carbide stage restores a working edge; the white ceramic rods refine it. For an edge needing only a light touch-up, use the ceramic stage rather than automatically removing more steel with carbide.
- Use the grip and orientation shown on the supplied packaging, with fingers clear of the blade path.
- For a dull compatible plain edge, draw the blade through the carbide stage in controlled passes. The Quick Fix guidance describes about three or four strokes; inspect progress instead of continuing indefinitely.
- Turn the tool to its ceramic stage and finish with a few light passes. Do not force the blade or saw it back and forth through the slot.
- Carefully remove sharpening residue, then clean and dry the blade. Keep both slots clear of debris. Follow the included directions for cleaning the tool.
S3B, S3G and S3O — coarse tungsten-steel and fine ceramic slots
These three color variants share the listed tungsten-steel coarse stage and ceramic fine stage. The exact tungsten alloy and preset angle are not documented, so we do not identify the coarse stage as a verified carbide grade or promise a particular angle.
- Identify the coarse and fine slots from the supplied markings before starting; color alone does not identify a stage.
- Secure the tool using its intended grip. For a compatible dull plain edge, use only the coarse work needed, with slow, light pull-through passes in the indicated direction.
- Use the fine ceramic stage for refinement or light touch-ups. Check the edge between short sets of passes.
- Do not assume either slot fits serrations, recurves or single-bevel blades. Stop if the edge does not seat properly or catches.
- Remove residue using the tool maker’s cleaning directions. Do not add oil or immerse the assembled tool without checking those directions.

S2 and S4 — mini grooved honing rods
S2 has a brass-colored handle; S4 has a silver-colored end. Both are listed as compact grooved metal rods. Handle color does not establish the rod’s alloy, grit or coating, and neither is being described as verified diamond or ceramic.
These are intended for controlled edge touch-ups. Match the existing bevel, work gently and keep your hand outside the edge path. Their short length limits clearance: use only a blade and grip you can control, and confirm the supplied operating directions before use. Do not copy a long kitchen-steel technique that puts the blade near your fingers on a mini rod. A damaged or heavily dull edge may need an appropriate sharpening system instead.
S1 BOV quick sharpener and bottle opener — verify the cutting insert
The current record confirms the BOV tool and bottle opener, but does not establish its cutting-insert material, preset angle or official operating instructions. We have not assigned it carbide, ceramic or diamond instructions. Contact CCC with stock number S1 for verification before use; do not treat the bottle opener as a sharpening surface.
Other abrasives: stones and diamond surfaces
Whetstones and diamond surfaces are covered in our broader guide for comparison; this does not mean those tools are currently in CCC stock. Waterstones, oilstones and bonded ceramic stones have different preparation and cleaning requirements. Use the exact maker’s lubricant and soaking instructions, not a single rule for every stone.
